When Southern Region members planned a rally to Buckler's Hard, Beaulieu River over the weekend of 8th to 11th August, they had not anticipated that the remnants of Hurricane Bertha would be hitting the country at the same time! Despite this, and with a careful eye on the weather forecasts, 10 boats with 26 members and their friends attended.
The drinks reception party planned for Friday evening, was cancelled due to torrential rain. But, the indomitable spirit of Broom owners prevailed when members John and Julia Greenhalf, sheltering under umbrellas, delivered canapes to each of the boats.
On Saturday, the sun shone brightly but with strong winds forecast later in the day, the time of the BBQ was changed to mid-day. This allowed boats that needed to depart to get back safely to their home berths during the afternoon. For those staying on, the afternoon passed very enjoyably with plenty of banter, the occasional glass of wine and ice creams.
Sunday lunch had been booked at Gins Farm, Beaulieu River, facilities owned by the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. All those wishing to attend were able to arrive by car. The carvery was excellent and the setting, overlooking the river , idylic.
On Monday morning, the wind speed had dropped slightly allowing the 3 remaining boats to travel back to their own marina berths ahead of the next batch of storm-force winds that came in from the Atlantic in the afternoon.
This was the last "at sea" rally of the Southern Region's season. The final event is a buffet supper, jointly organised and hosted by BOC and Broom Boats Ltd, which takes place on Friday, 19th September (the last Friday of the Southampton Boat Show) at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, Ocean Village.
