BOC at the 2017 London International Boat Show
Despite the Underground and Southern Rail strikes and forecasts of inclement weather (which undoubtedly affected public attendance) the Club again had a successful presence at the London International Boat Show. With the support of John Goode, Nautical Adviser to the National Boat Shows, we were again privileged to be given a free exhibition space. Only three clubs are fortunate enough to be offered this facility, which is granted subject to the provision of an attractive and informative display, manned throughout the Show. David Harrison and Don Walker arrived the day before the Show opened to the public to set up the stand and check that all was in order. Thanks must go to them for all their work and also to those members that took their turn in manning the stand during the Show. Our continued receipt of this benefit depends on their combined efforts!

Although the stand was at one extreme end of the exhibition hall, it was also close to the ’Dream Lodge Boating Lake’ exhibit, with lots going on in the way of on-the-water events. So, with this to guide them, a good number of BOC members made their way to the Club stand and received a warm welcome there.
Several potential members also visited and either applied for membership on the day or took away application forms with the intention of doing so. Boat Shows also provide opportunities to make contact with some of the Club’s existing sponsors, and to develop new links. This year’s event was no exception and the results will undoubtedly be of benefit to the Club.
The Chairman speaks!
A new feature of the Show this year was the opportunity provided to the three represented Clubs to have a half-hour slot on the Boat Show Main Stage. Each Club used their time differently; Gill used hers to deliver a very well-received and informative illustrated talk outlining the history and organisation of the BOC and its relationship with the Company. After the event, at least one member of the audience, who had never even heard of Broom boats, went directly to look at the Broom coupe exhibited on the Tingdene stand!
The Chairman takes to the stage!
Keeping up with tradition, Thursday night (12th January) saw the BOC Boat Show Reception. As previously, this was kindly funded by Broom Boats Ltd. This year, Tingdene Marinas hosted the gathering on their stand (where their display included a Broom coupe 35). Despite strikes and forecasts of poor weather, numbers attending were only slightly down on previous years. Linda Varney and Andrew and Celia Cotter organised the provision of the buffet and Broom Boats Ltd. the wine and soft drinks. This event provided another excellent opportunity for members to meet old friends, others from different Regions and staff from Broom Boats Ltd. and Tingdene Marinas. The sponsorship and support of this event is greatly valued by the Club.
A good time was had by all!
The London Boat Show has always provided a good start to the BOC boating season, and this year’s event was no exception!
