HEADS UP

The information and news sheet

of the

BROOM OWNERS CLUB EASTERN REGION

September 2020

From the “Admiral”.

Covid has cast a long shadow over our summer but I trust that you have all managed to spend at least some time enjoying yourself water. That long shadow has meant the cancellation of most of our events, all for Covid related reasons. This cancellation will include the Southwold – Dash since Southwold is effectively closed because of the restriction on rafting up.

Some of us in the region, however, have been considering where we go from here and this edition of "HEADS UP" is hopefully, the first step on Eastern Region's path to normality. What follows is tentative planning since any proposed event will be subject to then current Covid regulation/restriction. We wish to get back to our coffee mornings as soon as possible and as you will see we are planning to go back to East Hills Bistro in Brundall in October. Mary and I forward to seeing you all again at that event.

Best wishes and Stay Safe

EVENTS 2021.

Discussions with many of you at coffee mornings and elsewhere leads us to conclude that what members want is a mix of events such as meetings, rallies and cruises and that the majority of the rallies and cruises should be over a weekend, or at the most of three-day duration. With this in mind and, of course, subject to Covid 19, we would propose the following program for 2021.

Some events, in particular, Beccles, require quite a lot of organisation on the ground. If Beccles is to take place at all, we need volunteers. The more volunteers there are, the easier the task for everyone. As ever, a few members of the region put in a considerable amount of work on behalf of the many. In our region, however, the few members putting in the effort have reached an age when they shouldn't be doing it. It is unreasonable to expect members in their mid-80s to carry the burden of conceiving organising and executing a program such as that below. The time is fast approaching when these few members will no longer be able to carry the burden. In these circumstances, members are invited to volunteer to assist the existing team to get some experience of organising these various events and planning them, or simply to take over the running of a specific event.

To organise a cruise on the Broads is relatively straight-forward; you pick your venue, people turn up, you hope for decent weather and you organise a meal. Simples! Well it is, but if you want boats from the Northern Broads you need to check out that they can get to you and that they can get back. A weekend dash to Southwold is again relatively simple to organise but you do need to make sure that the tides work for you; the current group of organisers can assure members that there is also a fair degree of anxiety involved in keeping an eye on the weather!

There is a wealth of experience within our region membership; we need to mobilise this – the existing few need help and, if the region is to continue as an active region, that additional help will eventually have to take over the organising of events. Of the existing team of Jane, Keith, Alan, David and Robert, three are in their mid-80s!

Our major concern for the coming year is Beccles, we need a member to head up the organisation. The existing team will assist but there are some tasks, particularly the more physical ones, which our elder statesman are simply no longer able to undertake.

In short, to paraphrase Lord Kitchener, "YOUR REGION NEEDS YOU!"

The Fitting out Supper in April will probably be at Bramerton; for those that wish, this can also be a rally since there is adequate mooring both at the venue itself (WATERS EDGE) and further downstream.

The dinner at the Shakedown Cruise will be open to all members whether on the cruise or not. The Northern Rivers Barbecue and the Broads Pub Rally will be wholly within the Broads. If there is demand, we shall organise an Icicle Cruise to run on from the Christmas dinner in December 2021.

The above program is a proposal only at this stage. Comments and suggestions from members are very welcome and indeed are actively sought. to Robert Middleton on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
